U.S. Urges Its Citizens in Iran to “Leave Immediately”

U.S. Urges Its Citizens in Iran to “Leave Immediately”

The U.S. Virtual Embassy in Tehran and the U.S. State Department have issued an urgent travel advisory telling all American citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately amid rapidly escalating protests and security risks.

Here are the key points of the advisory:

• Leave Now:

U.S. citizens are strongly advised to depart Iran right away due to ongoing nationwide unrest, violent crackdowns, and increasing dangers, including the risk of arrest, detention, or injury.

• Land Routes Recommended:

Because many international flights are being canceled, Americans are urged to consider exiting Iran by land — especially through Türkiye (Turkey) or Armenia — if it is safe to do so.

• Communication Disruptions:

The advisory warns that internet and mobile communications may continue to be disrupted in many areas, making it difficult to stay in touch or access emergency information.

• Dual Nationals at Risk:

U.S.-Iranian dual citizens should leave using their Iranian passports, since Iran does not recognize dual nationality and treats them solely as Iranian citizens, which could complicate any attempts to leave.

• No U.S. Embassy Support:

Because the U.S. does not have an embassy in Iran, there is no direct U.S. consular assistance available — meaning Americans must plan their exit independently.

📍 Context: Protests & U.S.–Iran Tensions

The travel advisory comes as widespread protests in Iran — sparked by economic hardship and political discontent — have intensified across major cities. Security forces have responded with heavy measures, including internet shutdowns, arrests, and reports of thousands of casualties.

In response to the unrest, U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly encouraged Iranian protesters, saying “help is on its way” and advocating continued demonstrations against the Iranian government.

Trump has also cancelled meetings with Iranian officials, increased tariffs on countries doing business with Iran, and signalled that strong action could follow if the crackdown continues.

🧠 What This Means

Safety First for Americans: The situation is considered extremely volatile and dangerous for foreign nationals.

Travel and Exit Plans Are Crucial: U.S. citizens are urged to make exit plans that do not depend on government help.

Broader Geopolitical Tension: This advisory reflects rising U.S.–Iran tensions linked to protests, human rights concerns, and diplomatic pressures.
